CryptoCurrencies – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Everyone’s now talking about CryptoCurrencies now for a variety of reasons. So I thought it would be great to do my own research and share this with anyone that’s interested in this topic.  To make it easier to understand, I have separated this article into sections.

What’s a CryptoCurrency?

Much like a normal currency, a cryptocurrency is a digital asset that works in a way similar to normal currency.  You can buy and sell it, make payments using it, or just keep it hoarded.  Transactions are secured using cryptography (encryption) which gives you a degree of secrecy and safety.

The primary interest in these, in addition to the cryptographic protection is the fact that currency is not controlled by a central authority such as a Central Bank.  Instead, it’s decentralised and controlled collectively by groups of mutually distrustful people who are known as miners.  They are the ones that invest in equipment that are capable of generating new units of a particular cryptocurrency, which process is known as mining.  Most cryptocurrencies have an algorithmic maximum value meaning that they cannot be just created, and this helps to ensure that their value would remain, since they are like rare metals with a limited supply.

Note that with each successful mining of a coin, the effort that is needed to mine another increases, thereby again helping to limit the supply.  This means that the effort and computing power that is required now is exponentially greater than what it was a few years ago.  This means you should not get caught to people that sell mining devices, cards, USB sticks etc on eBay and other sites as they lack the power to give you any return on your investment.

The first and the most popular cryptocurrency is the BitCoin.  However, now there are more than 900 different varieties of cryptocurrency available.

Advantages and Disadvantages of using a CryptoCurrency

First, the advantages:

  1. Ability to make payments anywhere in the world, where borders will not matter.
  2. Personal information is not tied to your account.  You can maintain anonymity as you wish.
  3. Since there is no central controlling authority, no one can seize your funds.
  4. The protocols (if properly designed) cannot be manipulated or controlled by anyone, due to the cryptographic nature of it
  5. Merchants are protected from fraud, since payments cannot be reversed.
  6. Currency exchanges that help convert CryptoCurrency to fiat money may have lesser commissions and fees compared to payment gateways and banks.
  7. Your coins cannot be stolen, unless someone has access to the physical computers.  However, there is an increasing threat from hackers.

Some of the disadvantages:

  1. Many people still do not know what cryptocurrencies are.  This means that there is limited opportunities to use them.
  2. There is a high volatility in the value, since it is driven by supply and demand.  However, this is true for any valuable including Gold.
  3. There is a lot of negative media about Exchanges that have been hacked, thereby scaring off some people.  However, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives

Which CryptoCurrencies are the most popular?

In terms of market capitalisation, the top 3 cryptocurrencies as at 4th August 2017 are:

CryptoCurrency Market Capitalisation Number of Coins Value per coin
BitCoin $46,522,850,928 16,487,175 BTC $2821.76
Ethereum $21,158,756,420 93,770,525 ETH $225.64
Ripple $6,692,495,818 38,343,841,883 XRP $0.174539

Considering that the initial coin offering was at a very low value, you can understand from the above as to why people who originally invested in BitCoins are now millionaires.

In April 2010, a single BitCoin was worth 0.003 USD.   In March 2010, one user tried to auction off 10,000 coins for 50 USD, but no one was interested in buying them.  Today, those same coins are worth 28,217,600 USD.

How does one buy a CryptoCurrency?

Your first step would be to create an account for yourself at an Exchange.  I’ll add on a few examples as this article grows.  Creating an account would be relatively easy and fast, and it’s what is generally referred to as a Digital Wallet.

You would then connect your bank account, debit card, or credit card so that you can exchange digital currency into and out of your local currency.

Then you simply purchase whatever the type of cryptocurrency that is supported by that exchange and fill your wallet.

Be careful though.  Since your personal details are not recorded, most wallets are controlled by a password only.  This means that if you lose your password, you may lose access to your wallet and your investment.

How does one make payments with a CryptoCurrency?

That’s the main issue right now, since a lot of physical places do not accept payments via CryptoCurrency.  There are however a growing number of online retailers that accept payments via digital currencies, thanks to various third party payment processors.  One example you could look at is BitPay.com

What’s an ICO?

An ICO is an Initial Coin Offering, which is how a new cryptocurrency gets crowdfunded.  If you’re interested in investing in cryptocurrencies, there are two main ways.  One is to do trading or speculation which is rather risky due to the volatile nature of the currency.  The other method would be to buy coins at an ICO, and then hold on to it for some time and then sell.

Recently there were a few incidents where the ICO itself was hacked, meaning that the coins people paid for didn’t actually end up in their own wallets but were diverted to the hacker.  Individuals did not lose out however, since the Exchanges covered this due to it being an issue on their side.

Any new CryptoCurrencies coming up?

One cryptocurrency that is being launched this month is PlexCoin.  Not a lot of information is known about them, but they are having a ICO and they offer bonuses for those that register in the intial round.  I have registered an account out of curiosity, and if you’re interested, the link is https://www.plexcoin.com/?ref=5Y7jMJnu09.  If you use this link and eventually make a purchase, both you and I will get 5% added on to our purchase.  That’s an additional incentive if you’re interested in foraying into this.

Update: Quebec (Canada) has asked PlexCoin not to market their ICO there.  You can read about that here.  Still, I’m thinking of putting in a small payment, just to see what happens.

Note (8/8/2017): It’s pretty much confirmed that PlexCoin is a scam.  Be careful with what you do with your money!

Conclusion

Buyer beware, is what can ultimately be said.  Don’t expect to make millions overnight, after being attracted by all the nice looking case studies.  Instead, if you’re looking to make small investments and grow it with time, cryptocurrencies will be a good area to look at.

Ode to Fart

Saw this on Facebook. Author unknown – if anyone knows who, let me know and due credit will be given

Fart
A fart can be quiet,
A fart can be loud,
Some leave a powerful,
Poisonous cloud.

A fart can be short,
Or a fart can be long,
Some farts have been known,
To sound just like a song.

Some farts do not smell,
While others are vile,
A fart may pass quickly,
Or linger awhile.

A fart can create
A most-curious medley,
A fart can be harmless,
Or silent, but deadly.

A fart can occur
In a number of places,
And leave everyone
With strange looks on their faces.

From wide-open prairies,
To small elevators,
A fart will find all of us
Sooner or later.

So be not afraid
Of the invisible gas,
For always remember,
That farts, too, shall pass.

Known Spammers in Sri Lanka

The following is a list of spammers that I have identified for sending unsolicited email to my domains.  This list is updated up to the 16th of September 2013.  You can configure this SPAM list via your server settings by using a SPAM filter.

Hope this makes your life easier.  For me, this has helped remove more than a hundred spam mails that come to my office mail PER DAY!

There are 1000+ entries here, and some of them are identified by IP address.  These are spammers who do not even use a domain, or spammers that use a domain that routes back to a single IP (not shared), meaning that we can safely blacklist that IP address.  Enjoy

Fresh Milk versus Powdered Milk

Ambewela Milk

Ambewela Milk

With all the scares and scandals that are associated with powdered milk, lets examine both sides of the story

Milk Powder

This is the predominant form in Sri Lanka and for some it is a matter of privilege and pride to say that they drink a certain brand of powdered milk.  Now people are running to distance themselves from those brands and companies.  Let’s examine some of the factors.

  1. Long shelf life, which is generally more than one year
  2. Easy to prepare.  Just add water
  3. Fortified with minerals and vitamins and sometimes various other chemicals which are said to be beneficial to brain development in children, or for preventing osteoporosis in women.
  4. Some say it tastes better than fresh milk
  5. Some also say that it is creamier (more on that later)
  6. Some argue but haven’t really proven that the best components are removed and used for manufacturing other products and then the milk has vitamins and minerals added to it
  7. There is new evidence to show that powdered milk contains more cholesterol causing agents than fresh milk
  8. One packet of 400 grams of milk powder generally gives us 3.5 litre of milk which is equal to 17.5 glasses of milk.  Generally, people have gotten used to using the wrong quantity of powder meaning that the milk that is made is more creamier, leading to lesser number of glasses.

Fresh Milk

There are a few producers that sell fresh milk in Tetra packs and these are available in most shops and supermarkets.  The image of this post shows the Ambewela product lineup which includes 1 litre and 200 ml packs

Points to consider

  1. A more natural version of the drink that many people say to be Nature’s Energy Drink
  2. Compared to raw milk which can spoil quickly, fresh milk is packed in TetraPaks for a shelf life of several months
  3. If you think the taste is not to your liking, you could add a bit of sugar or a flavouring agent such as Malt, Chocolate, etc
  4. If you argue that powdered milk is creamier, that is either because you have used less than the recommended amount of water, or because the butterfat content is higher.
  5. Compared to the cost of milk powder which is approx Rs 325 for a 400 gram packet, a 1 litre carton of milk from Ambewela, Rich Life or a similar local manufacturer is in the range of Rs. 140.  Once opened, the carton can be kept in the refrigerator for several days.
  6. If you believe that you cannot use it up in several days, the 200 ml pack is approximately Rs 35 and is equal to one glass of milk.
  7. If the requirement is to give your child one glass of milk per day for a month you spend approx Rs 1,000 if you buy the individual servings.

For the dairy farmers, the price they get per litre of raw milk is less than Rs. 50.  If the government could step in via Milco and expand their facilities, fresh milk could be made available countrywide at a much more affordable price than what the private sector is offering and their would be some healthy competition.  Milco could make a higher profit than what it is doing now.

Food for thought – think about it.

Here’s the transcript of a chat I had with an operator of a website promoting FOREX Trading.  Please excuse the multiple spelling mistakes, as I have taken the chat transcript exactly as it is.  For those of you that are interested in FOREX trading, the key point to know is that FOREX trading in Sri Lanka is legally limited to licensed operators only.  If you are trading in FOREX it is a violation of the law.  Further, you have to deposit money into a foreign account via your credit card.  This is also a violation due to unauthorised foreign remittances.  Also, your Credit Card has been issued for personal use only, and not for trading purposes.  If you have an internationally issued Credit card, then that would be OK, but if you residing in Sri Lanka, you still cannot get away from my first point regarding unlicensed trading.

Here’s a press release from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka about illegal Forex Trading: http://www.cbsl.gov.lk/pics_n_docs/02_prs/_docs/press/press_20120530ea.doc

Also please be aware that trading in FOREX trading may be a risky gamble if you don’t know what you’re doing.  It requires deep insight to know how the market will turn and you have to stay at it.  Having a good night sleep and then coming back, you may find that the market has gone completely in the other direction.

Ultimately, look around, and make the right decision for yourself

How to submit a professional application and CV for a vacancy

In my position, I see a lot of applications and CV from potential employees.  Unfortunately most of the time some applications are knocked off in the first round itself due to the unprofessional way in which people apply.

Here’s my viewpoint as an Employer.

BE THOROUGH

Take time to read the advertisement or job description fully.  Don’t just read the top part and send off your application as fast as you can.  Being the first to apply does not get you the job.  Example, I recently advertised for Management Trainee, and there were a few that applied for Management Trainer positions.  I also advertised for a Secretary post asking for ladies to apply, but several men applied as well.

BE PROFESSIONAL

Prepare your CV with proper formatting and make it attractive.  Avoid using flowery borders and other distractions.  Inserting a picture of yourself is also recommended.

ALWAYS

Include a covering letter explaining why you are suitable for the position, and why you believe I should hire you.  If they have not asked for a covering letter, adding one will show you to be professional and understanding.  If one is asked for but you do not include one, that shows you have no attention to detail, and / or do not care

BE PRECISE

When sending submissions / applications via email, include the vacancy title / position in the subject of your email.  If a company advertises for several positions, and your email arrives without a proper subject, chances of it being ignored or mis-categorized are higher.

STAND OUT FROM THE REST

When attaching your CV, don’t use file-names such as “cv.doc”, “bio.doc”, “my cv.doc”, “curriculum-vitae”, etc.  When all of the applications are received and grouped together, your CV may get lost or overwritten by someone else’s.  “curriculum-vitae-NAME-POSITION.doc” is a much nicer file-name.

BE POLITE

When sending an email, don’t apply to several organisations at once by putting multiple addresses in the TO or CC. eg: careers@esoft.lk, careers@dialog.lk, etc. This shows that you are unsure of yourself, uncommitted, unprofessional

Don’t forward the same application to many people by sending one, forwarding again, forwarding yet again, etc. so that your application looks like a chain letter.

BE YOUR OWN JUDGE

Don’t apply for the position if you are not suitable for it. You’re just sending something that will get thrown out at first glance.  I recently advertised for a position of a VB programmer and people straight out of ‘A’ Levels without any computing knowledge applied.  Same happened for a recent advert I put asking for Web Application Developers with PHP knowledge.   Don’t think people will pity you and give a job just because you apply. You’re wasting everyone’s time.

Hope this helps.  More Tips will be added later.

Life in England in the 1500’s

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn’t just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500’s:

  1. Most people got married in June, because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
  2. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children! Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying,

“Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”

  3. Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and off the roof. Hence the saying

    “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

  4. There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That’s how canopy beds came into existence.
  5. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying “dirt poor“.  The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a “threshold.”
  6. In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme

“Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.”

  7. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could “bring home the bacon.” They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and “chew the fat”
  8. Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
  9. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or “upper crust”.
  10. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a “wake”.
  11. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a “bone-house” and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found t have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the “graveyard shift“) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be “saved by the bell” or was considered a “dead ringer
